Remember when music videos were new and exciting? Every newly released video was like opening a different box of candy–some told a story while others were abstract (and sometimes ridiculous) musings–all of which, no doubt, emblazoned fresh iconic images on one’s young, spongelike brain forever.
The vast majority of music videos today, while visually pleasing, conform to a big-budget overly-produced commercial recipe made up mostly of sexy dancing, hard stares and muggin’ for the camera, which is what we all now have become accustomed to, I suppose.
But, today, I hold out hope for a new school of music video production after seeing a series of short films put to music by Alexx Thompson.
An artist and poet, Alexx Thompson appears to travel the globe accumulating rare and unique glimpses of human life, the diversity of culture, and sometimes the politics of the people. His work is masterfully edited and paired with just the right genre of music that engages the viewer and makes you want to jump into the rhythm of his world.
All I can say is, Alexx Thompson has either substantially raised the bar for home movies of one’s travels, or he is forging an exciting new artistic genre for music video–much like the early years of music video, where there are no rules, only art, and the goal is pure self-expression through visual storytelling, rhythm and music–but with a dose of reality.
